Veteran Yoruba actor Ibrahim Bello Sanya, popularly known as Baba Lawori, has made a distress call for assistance after allegedly being assaulted by Koko Zaria, a prominent figure in the Lagos State National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). The incident reportedly occurred during the 2024 Idimu Day event on Tuesday, June 25, as Lawori was fulfilling his role as an MC.
In a viral video posted on his Instagram page, Baba Lawori recounted the harrowing experience. He expressed bewilderment over the attack, stating, “Please save me from Koko Zaria, I do not know what I did to him.” According to his account, while he was on stage, someone informed him that Koko Zaria wanted to see him. Upon approaching Koko Zaria, Lawori apologized for not acknowledging him earlier and promised to do so upon returning to the stage. However, as he turned away, a man accompanying Koko Zaria allegedly struck him on the head with a bottle of Martell, causing him to bleed profusely and lose consciousness.
Following the incident, Lawori’s plea for help gained significant attention on social media platforms. In response to public outcry and the video evidence shared by Lawori, the Nigerian Police have pledged to investigate the assault. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the investigation in a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. Adejobi assured concerned citizens that justice would be pursued diligently, stating, “This will be investigated, and justice will be served. Many people have called me about this case.”
The incident has sparked widespread concern and condemnation, highlighting issues of violence and security during public events. Lawori’s ordeal underscores the need for accountability and protection of individuals, especially in public gatherings where such incidents can occur unexpectedly.
